Aerial Proficiency Check – Water Bucket

Heli Dynamic recently conducted an Aerial Proficiency Check focused on water bucket operations at a dam near Gympie airfield.

This session emphasized the critical skills required for precision water drop operations, showcasing our commitment to high standards in helicopter training and pilot proficiency, and is a CASA requirement every 12 months for pilots that wish to conduct water bucketing activities.

Training Overview

The proficiency check took place under ideal weather conditions, with clear skies and minimal wind interference. Our Bell Longranger 206 B3 helicopter, equipped with a water bucket, served as the platform for this essential check. The session was designed to evaluate and enhance the pilot's skills in aerial water drop operations, ensuring readiness for real-world applications.

The Pilot's Journey

The pilot, who travelled all the way from the Northern Territory for this check, demonstrated commendable dedication to professional development. His journey underscored the importance of this proficiency check and the value placed on precision and expertise in water bucket operations.

Key Components of the Proficiency Check

  1. Safety Protocols: The session began with a thorough review of safety protocols, including emergency procedures, communication strategies, and risk assessment. Emphasizing safety ensured that all subsequent activities were conducted within a secure framework.
  2. Equipment Handling: The pilot received detailed instructions on the handling and operation of the water bucket. This included attachment and detachment procedures, maintenance checks, and troubleshooting common issues to ensure the equipment's reliability and performance.
  3. Flight Techniques: The pilot demonstrated various flight techniques essential for successful water drops. This included hover control, approach angles, and optimal drop heights. Each maneuver was carefully evaluated to ensure precision and control.
  4. Precision Water Drops: The core of the proficiency check involved precision water drops. The pilot conducted multiple practice runs, focusing on accurately dropping water at designated targets. This exercise is crucial for applications such as firefighting and agricultural irrigation.
  5. Environmental Considerations: Understanding environmental factors that impact water drop operations was a key component of the check. Wind patterns, terrain, and visibility conditions were discussed, providing the pilot with the knowledge to adapt to varying scenarios.

Highlights of the Day

The proficiency check was highly successful, with the pilot showcasing significant skill in water drop accuracy and overall handling of the water bucket system. The feedback from the instructor was positive, highlighting the pilot's proficiency and readiness for real-world operations.

A notable highlight was the challenging exercise where the pilot had to drop water on a simulated fire target. This exercise tested his precision and control, simulating real-life firefighting scenarios. The pilot's performance was commendable, demonstrating his capability to handle complex aerial tasks.
